Jenő Gál, former general director of the Hungarian Dance Academy dies at the age of 77
It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the death of Jenő Gál, Harangozó and Lőrinc awarded former general director, college professor, Professor Emeritus of the Hungarian Dance Academy, the Hungarian Dance Artists Association’s Lifetime Achievement award winner, who passed away at the age of 77 after suffering from serious illness.
Studied at the State Ballet Institute from 1950 to 1957. After graduation he contracted with the ballet company of the Hungarian State Opera from where he retired in 1985.
He worked as part-time teacher in the National Ballet Institute from 1963 to 1968 when he was appointed as college senior lecturer. After being grade master several times at the institute, he became college professor in 1983.
In addition to teaching, he was a member of the classical ballet and pas de deux research workgroup and was involved in theoretical activities too. In the framework of these activities he wrote a significant volume of college textbooks, some of them published also abroad.
His pupils achieved outstanding results at at domestic and international competitions and he also taught at courses in Hungary and abroad with great recognition.
In 1992 he was appointed as general director of the Hungarian Dance Academy, and he held this office until June 1998. It was under his management that significant development in the dance pedagogue training programme started and off-site trainings were launched. From 1995 he was the head of the Department for Training Dance Pedagogues and Choreographers, and from 2001, the head of the Classical Ballet Department. For several years he was the permanent advisor of the Hungarian Accrediation Committee and of the Hungarian Scholarship Board.
We will remember him with respect and great fondness. The Hungarian Dance Academy will provide funeral honoures for Jenő Gál. Arrangements will be announced at a later time.
